This article discussed that TV has countless ill effects with people. TV has reshaped society in every corner of the world. The US became the biggest TV viewers at present. According to some of surveys, Americans watch more than five hours per day of TV on average. The consequences for US society are profound and troubling.
First, heavy TV viewing is almost like an addiction. They will feel little pleasure in the beginning. However, as the time passes, they will feel more unhappiness and remorse. It’s bad for one’s mental health.
Second, heavy TV viewing has contributed to social fragmentation. The US used to spend together in community in the pass. But it’s totally different right now. They prefer watching TV to talking with their neighbors.
Third, it’s also bad for one’s physical health. There is roughly two-thirds of the US overweight. They don’t like to exercise. They always get together with their potato chips on the couch. That’s why more and more Americans now overweight.
At the same time, someone who is rich or powerful can promote something by TV. Everything, everyone—even any ideas and wars—can be sold on TV. It looks like some kind of brainwashing machines. Because when we watched TV we wouldn’t have a conversation with the one on TV. However, no conversation is equal no think. We just passively received information from TV.
Many experts believe that the mental-health effects of TV viewing might run even deeper than addiction, consumerism, loss of social trust and political propaganda. Perhaps TV is damaging heavy viewers’ brains and making themselves to idiots.
Nowadays, in order to avoid this kind of situations, some countries limit on TV advertising, especially to young children. Of course, the best defense is our own self-control. We can all leave the TV off more hours per day and spend that time reading, talking with each other and rebuilding the bases of personal health and social trust
